Later, nobody on the deck, not even Picard or Worf, seems able to comprehend that Tasha's sister has behaved bravely and honorably: fulfilling her promise to aid the Enterprise in its rescue mission and then attempting to sacrifice her own life, while sparing Data's and Riker's, all in service of a greater good.
Troi and Crusher practically sneer at a newcomer on the ship they're inexplicably unpleasant. I found the other lead characters out of tune here too. The big lesson he learns from Riker about stranger danger seems more appropriate to a He-Man cartoon (with Data in the Orko role) than to a fourth-season TNG episode. Honestly, this didn't need to be a "Data episode" at all. The sets and even the actors and costumes have a Season 1 vibe, and Data behaves in a way that's out of character, developing a sudden emotional-but-not-emotional attachment to someone he's just met. These missions were often punctuated by space battles, but battle was never the sole purpose of the game.This episode gives the impression of having been thrown together in a hurry. Most of the fun Trek games we remember (PC and 16-bit era) involved controlling the characters themselves, essentially enacting new episodes of the show. Sure, Star Trek has its share of battles, but it's not Star Wars. By and large, people watch Star Trek for the stories and characters, not epic space battles. We put the game in our rental queue just to make sure, but it seems like basing a Star Trek game entirely on space combat isn't really a good idea. It's not that the game doesn't look decent, it's just that it really doesn't seem to fit the Trek universe.
Or will they? Two new trailers for the game have appeared on Marketplace, and we were unimpressed. Naturally, Star Trek fans will probably find the most to like about this title. Bad reviews focus on difficult controls and repetitive gameplay, while good reviews mention the epic battles and storyline. They range from 40 to 91 on Metacritic and the game averages 67% on Game Rankings. Reviews for Star Trek: Legacy are all over the map.
